Q. Do you accept new patients?
A. Absolutely! We welcome new patients, both adults and children.
Q. What insurances do you accept?
A. We will file insurance as a courtesy to all insurance companies. However, Dr Koehler is only considered in network with Delta Premiere Plans. Because there are so many dental insurance companies and programs, it is nearly impossible for us to have complete knowledge of all of them. We encourage you to review your benefits and plans before scheduling an appointment with our office to better understand what is going to be your out of pocket expense the day of your appointment and any other pending treatment.
Q. Do you treat children? What age?
A. Yes we welcome children. While there are exceptions, Dr. Koehler feels that most children should be seen for at least a get acquainted visit and visual exam when all the baby teeth have erupted (usually 36 months). We want your child's first dental experience to be a positive one, so it's better to introduce them to professional dental care before any actual problems develop. This also allows us to reinforce proper home care techniques for your child and to answer any questions you might have about your child's developing dentition.
Q. What is the difference between D.M.D. and D.D.S.?
A. That's a good question. A D.M.D. degree stands for Doctor of Dental Medicine, versus a D.D.S., which is for Doctor of Dental Surgery. Some dental schools feel that the D.M.D. degree is more descriptive of the training that dentists receive, but the course of study, qualifications, and subjects covered are essentially the same. The only difference between the two is the university or dental school that confers the degree. Dr. Koehler received his dental degree from The Medical College of Georgia, which gives the D.M.D.
Q. Is your office wheelchair accessible?
A. Yes, we are on the main level of the Miramont Office Park. Each clinical treatment room is large enough to accommodate a wheelchair. If you need any additional assistance to enter the building, please let us know.
Q. Who is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?
A. Any patient with good oral health makes for an ideal candidate for the numerous cosmetic procedures we have available to us. Dr. Koehler is extremely skilled and experienced in the various cosmetic options, and enjoys helping patients realize their potential for a beautiful smile. After a comprehensive exam and cleaning, we will be happy to discuss anything about your smile you are unhappy with and will offer as many treatment options as possible to enable you to make an informed decision.
Q. What is your financial policy?
A. We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. We also offer CareCredit, which is a flexible payment program that allows qualifying patients to finance the cost of their dental care interest free for up to 12 months. Other low interest financing is also available for more extended payment plans, if desired. It's ideal for co-payments, deductibles and treatment not covered by insurance, and qualifying is quick and easy.
Q. How does Invisalign work?
A. Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, Invisalign translates the dentist's instructions into a series of nearly undetectable aligners. You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, moving your teeth gradually week by week, millimeter by millimeter until you've achieved the desired result.
Q. How often will I have to wear my aligners?
A. Invisalign only works while you're wearing the aligners. It's recommended that you wear your aligners full-time, day and night, except to eat, brush and floss your teeth - or as directed by your dentist.
Q. How long does Invisalign take?
A. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of your case, which determines the number of aligners you need. However, the average is about 12 months, but only your dentist can determine the length of treatment required.
Q. How much does Invisalign cost?
A. As with traditional braces, the cost will be based on the complexity of your case and the length of treatment. Many doctors charge the same for Invisalign as they do for traditional braces. Also, if your dental insurance plan covers traditional braces, it will typically cover Invisalign to the same extent.
Q. Do you place amalgam (silver) fillings, or do you think that they should be removed if you already have them?
A. We very rarely place amalgam fillings these days. Conservatively, 99.98% of the routine fillings we place are composite resin (tooth colored) fillings. Dr. Koehler feels that whether you are concerned about mercury in amalgam fillings or not, (there is much controversy about whether this should even be a concern), composite resin fillings have evolved in recent years to the point where they are as good as, and in some ways better than, amalgam if they are placed properly. So, we don't use amalgam, and haven't for quite a few years.
As to whether you should have amalgam fillings removed that are still serviceable and not defective or symptomatic in any way, the answer is probably not. Quite frankly, the release of mercury vapor that would be generated by the removal of the amalgam filling would likely be a greater health risk than leaving the amalgam in place. When and if the filling begins to exceed it's useful life (all fillings eventually have to be replaced), at that point in time you might want to have it replaced with a different material.
Q. What is LUMINEERS BY CERINATE?
A. LUMINEERS BY CERINATE is thin porcelain shields that are bonded to the front of your teeth to create dramatic changes in your smile.
Q. Is there any pain involved?
A. No! Because LUMINEERS BY CERINATE requires little to no preparation; there is no need for shots or drilling with no removal of painful tooth structure.
Q. How long will it take to change my smile?
A. While some people may need other dental treatments, LUMINEERS BY CERINATE typically requires two dental visits.
Q. How long does LUMINEERS BY CERINATE last?
A. Long-term clinical research with LUMINEERS BY CERINATE (over 20 years) shows 100% retention with no discoloration.
