Dental Laser Tissue Treatment

Lasers are revolutionizing the way we do dental treatments and our patients are reaping the rewards. We’ve previously introduced laser cavity detection into our office that uses a pen-like wand to scan the surface of your teeth with lightwave technology. These light waves will pass through a healthy tooth, but will reflect off of cavities, allowing us to see the exact size, shape and location of deep cavities below the service. We know that the tissues of the mouth are just as important as the teeth, and because of this, we’ve become one of the few practices to offer dental laser tissue treatment for our patients.

Our lasers emit a beam of concentrated light energy, usually within the infrared light spectrum, which is harmless to our patients. With laser light, we are able to work with biological tissues in the mouth to perform effective treatments on our patients with much more efficiency than cutting with our usual tools. We use the dental laser to target inflamed gum tissue and remove it from the root of the tooth. Infected tissue must be removed to prevent a spread of infection and further tooth decay. We then use the laser to scrape off plaque and buildup around the tooth root and below or above the gumline. The treated area is then cleaned including any protrusions on the teeth allowing the gum and the root an opportunity to heal. Lasers allow us to target the symptoms of periodontal disease precisely and without general anesthesia.

Combating Periodontal Disease with Laser Tech

Dental laser tissue treatment is most often used in those with periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Gum disease is a condition generally caused by poor oral hygiene, such as not brushing or flossing frequently. It can also be caused by conditions such as diabetes or smoking that cause tissues to be weaker than they otherwise would have been. The CDC estimates that around 64.7 million American adults suffer from some form of gum disease. Periodontal disease forms from the bacteria in plaque that sits on your teeth, slowly eroding the tooth enamel. The area of the gums around the teeth are especially susceptible to decay. Gum disease is usually painless but can manifest itself in symptoms such as red, swollen or bleeding gums, and receding gums that pull away from the teeth. Tooth loss and loosening can occur threatening the integrity and structure of the underlying bones.  Dental laser tissue treatment is offered in our office to help combat problems with the gums and tissues while providing you the best tools available for success with your oral health and your fight against periodontal disease.

The Benefits of Dental Laser Tissue Treatment

The versatility and benefits of our dental laser tissue treatment are very extensive. We have found through our training and successful patient experiences that dental laser tissue treatments can be used to disinfect the cavity of a tooth prior to a filling. It can also detect subsurface cavities much better than x-rays and traditional probing tools. We can easily correct a gummy smile or reshape gum and bone tissue to expose a healthier tooth structure, creating a stronger tooth foundation for restoration replacements to be made.  Dental laser tissue treatment deals a lot with oral tissue, so we are able to painlessly remove soft tissue folds created by ill-fitting dentures or remove benign tumors anywhere in the mouth. Many of our patients receive this service as both a regular and deep cleaning treatment to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. What you might not know about dental laser tissue treatment is that it has been shown to treat cold sores, relieve pain, speed up healing, treat TMJ (Thermomandibular Joint Syndrome) and accelerate the teeth whitening process. For those who suffer from hot or cold sensitivity, we can seal the tubules at the root of your sensitive teeth so that you no longer suffer from that sensitivity.

The best part about dental laser tissue treatments (as compared to traditional oral treatment methods) is that there is no anesthesia needed, little to no pain and minimal (if any) stitches needed during treatment. We find that lasers help reduce the amount of mouth bleeding as compared to cutting with tools and that the healing and regeneration process is accelerated since there is less trauma to the mouth. Lasers inherently have sterilizing capabilities, reducing the likelihood of any tooth infections when treatment is completed. The benefits of this technology are far-reaching; there is little that our dental laser tissue treatments can’t do.
